Police in a spot after woman is gang-raped and tied to railway line

Women in Mombasa want the government to act tough on rapists after two men attacked a woman and tied her onto railway lines.

The enraged women leaders and activists took to the streets on Tuesday protesting against increased rape cases.

They staged a demo in Kibarani along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway and marched to the railway lines where a woman was gang-raped and dumped.

The women carried placards stating, “Stop Violence, Respect Women”.

The women activists from the International Centre for Reproductive Health Kenya (ICRHK) and Sauti ya Wanawake organisations condemned the recent act against the 23-year-old woman who is still in hospital.

They accused police of not pursuing the case with the seriousness it deserves.

VERY SERIOUS

“We have not seen any of the culprits being brought to book. What happened to our colleague (victim) is very serious and we need action against the perpetrators,” said Mombasa nominated ward representative, Ms Mary Akinyi,

The victim was gang raped by two men as she was walking home from a funeral meeting in Kibarani on February 3.

Later, the men slashed her leg with a panga before tying the mother of two on railway lines leaving her for dead. She was ran over by a cargo train which crashed her legs.

“Hadn’t I screamed, I could have been killed but luckily the locomotive driver heard my cries. My leg has been amputated and I am afraid my future is bleak,” she said during an interview at hospital.

The family says the mother of two is currently recuperating in hospital in Mombasa but could not afford medical bill.

Her hospital bill has shot to more than Sh2million. Her mother, has appealed to well-wishers to come to the rescue of her daughter and help settle the bill.

Well-wishers can send their contributions to M-pesa paybill number 641881 for contribution towards the victim.
