Police warn public against electronics dealers with no physical addresses

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has warned members of the public from buying electronic gadgets from dealers with no physical address.

According to the DCI, the dealers should have Identifiable Trading Building/Premises with requisite authorization documents that are conspicuously displayed including licenses, permits and other local and/or national approvals.

“Always when buying insist on issuance of a receipt clearly itemizing the particulars of the bought gadget. Always keep the receipt or secure it Electronically by Photographing and archiving in a reliable system e.g. a desktop,” the DCI has said.

The DCI added that most of those electronics are stolen items from armed gangsters who have violently robbed innocent citizens and in some cases have killed or injured their victims.

“When Police Forensically Investigate and find you in possession of such said devices, by the time it is established that you were not involved in the crime, you may have suffered immensely,” the DCI added.

The DCI further warned that anyone found with suspected stolen property will be treated as a criminal.

Electronic dealers have also been urged to get the IT/ICT technology that ensures every electronic gadget brought from them is marked.

This, according to the DCI, will make it hard for criminals to hawk it and easier for investigative agencies to track and identify the electronic device.

“In case of any doubt that you may be harbouring any gadget of suspicious source, please, and in confidence, report at any police station or DCI office,” the DCI said.
