Prisons risk missing Club Championships
Kenya Prisons women volleyball team are in danger of missing out on this year’s edition of the Africa Club Championships in Egypt following a delay by the Government to sanction the club’s trip.
The six-time African champions alongside local rivals Kenya Pipeline and Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) are the country’s representatives at the annual tournament which gets underway next Wednesday.
Nairobi News understands that the wardresses are the remaining outfit among the Kenyan trio yet to commence processing their Visas to North Africa a process that requires atleast three working days.
The Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government is also yet to disburse the required Sh 10 million needed by the team to honour the trip, a development that has caused panic at the team’s camp at the Safaricom indoor Arena, Kasarani.
MAJOR SETBACK
“No communication is forthcoming from the authorities, though the unofficial line is that the Government has no money. But we continue with our preps with the hope that the situation will change for the better. It will be a big blow should we fail to travel because everyone is keen to reclaim the continental title” a team member who preferred not to be named for fear of reprisal told Nairobi News.
The Principal Secretary, State Department of Interior Monica Juma, and Commissioner for Prisons were both not available for comment.
The team’s impending absence from the event will be a major setback in Kenya’s hopes of reclaiming the continental title that Prisons lost to Algeria GSM Petroliers in Tunisia last year.
With six African titles to its name and a bulk of its players having helped the national women volleyball team to several continental and international honours, the Prisons team is widely regarded as the best volleyball outfit on the continent over the past decade.
