Pumwani in record 35 New Year births
As tradition dictates, New Year was marked by celebrations, exchange of pleasantries and joy worldwide.F or revellers, it was a moment to usher in 2015 in style staying up all night in entertainment joints.
However, as this was going on, maternity hospitals and wards were awash with activity as midwives assisted mothers to welcome their bundles of joy.
At Pumwani Maternity Hospital, 35 babies had been born by noon on Thursday, 18 of whom were boys.
“Unlike other years, this year was not very active in terms of children born on New Year. However, the first baby was born at midnight through caesarean section and we have also had 25 normal deliveries,” said Nurse Esther Supaki, the assistant matron.
BOUNCING BABY
Ms Faith Wangui is one of 2015’s new mothers. She delivered her 3.2kg bouncing baby boy 40 minutes past midnight.
“I did not expect to give birth on New Year’s Day since the nurses had told me that my due date was January 23,” said a fatigued Ms Wangui.
However, she is anxiously looking forward to the year, which she hopes will be full of good tidings.
“I am full of expectations for the new year. I want to complete my college education and pursue my career in catering,” said the 19-year-old.
She named her son Joe Maina.
“I named my precious son Joe because I love the name and it was the first that came to mind when I saw my baby,” she added.
While Ms Wangui had the privilege to name her son, a joyous Rosemary Mukiri did not mind the name her husband chose for their second born.
“I am happy with the name Grace that my husband chose for our dear daughter and would not change it for anything,” said the 23-year-old Ms Mukiri.
