Punish Sonko for calling me a land grabber, says Kidero
Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero says he will not appear before a House committee if Senator Mike Sonko is not punished for insulting him during a sitting on Wednesday.
He said if no action was taken against Senator Sonko, he would move to the Supreme Court to challenge the parliamentary immunity given to members in order to clear his names.
Mr Kidero has written to Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro, asking him to take action against the Nairobi senator, failure to which he would not attend any other sitting called by the House committee on County Public Accounts and Investments.
The senator insulted Mr Kidero on Wednesday and accused him of grabbing property belonging to city residents.
The governor, who was appearing before the committee to respond to audit queries, denied grabbing any property.
“The treatment I received from Senator Sonko was undeserved,” Mr Kidero says in the Friday letter, copied to National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi.
The senator did not substantiate his claims even after he was pushed to do so by Committee Chairman Anyang Nyong’o.
The governor added that he would not feel secure before the committee any more.
The committee is expected to look into the incident even though some members have expressed dismay at Mr Sonko’s behaviour. Mr Ethuro is expected to respond to Mr Kidero’s demands this week.
