Pupils: This is why we caned our female teachers

Pupils of Kirimon Primary School in Samburu have penned a letter to the board of management to justify why they attacked their teachers on Monday.

A letter seen by Nairobi News that was shared among education stakeholders after the incident will be among the exhibits that investigators hope will help bring the perpetrators to book.

The letter dated June 20, 2017 had a reference “reasons why we have beaten our teachers”, explaining the cause in five points.

One of the reasons in the letter, which is littered with grammatical errors, was that the teachers were “chasing” them from school (suspending them), with the second point blaming the teachers for making them fail in their examinations.

HARASSMENT OF BOYS

Being verbally abused by female teachers was also cited as another reason; harassment of boys by female teachers and them being sent away from the staffroom by the teachers anytime they try to consult their teachers were the other reasons.

This comes as teachers from the Samburu West school vowed not to go back to the institution citing security concerns.

The five female teachers, who said their lives were in danger, asked the Teachers Service Commission office to move with speed and give them a lasting solution to their pleas.

The teachers said the pupils embarrassed them by caned them and forced them to kneel down before other pupils and apologize while raising their hands.

They are now calling upon education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Kenya National Union of Teachers Executive Secretary Wilson Sossion to intervene the situation and transfer them to another County.
