A bus ferrying 35 pupils and two teachers of Kirera Primary School veered off the Meru-Embu road at Ruguri bridge in Tharaka-Nithi County on Wednesday morning but no one was injured.

The pupils and their teachers were heading to Nairobi from Meru to participate in the ongoing national music festivals.

Chuka/Igambangombe deputy police boss James Kilonzo said the driver of the bus avoided hitting two oncoming lorries that had occupied both lanes of the road at around 5.20 am when the accident occurred.

The vehicle then landed in a ditch but no injuries were reported.

“The driver was forced out of the road to avoid a head-on-collision with two the lorries,” said Mr Kilonzo.

According to a witness, Mr Nicholus Mutegi, he heard a big bang followed by screaming. On rushing to the scene, he found the bus in the ditch with the passengers stuck inside.

“We broke the windscreen and helped them out,” said Mr Mutegi.

The pupils spent the rest of the morning at a nearby tea leaves collection centre until another bus picked them and proceeded with their journey.
