Quorum hitch as Cord MCAs boycott debate on Kidero impeachment

By LILIAN MUTAVI October 11th, 2016 1 min read

Members of the Nairobi County Assembly allied to the Cord coalition frustrated the scheduled debate on a motion to impeach Governor Evans Kidero by boycotting Tuesday’s afternoon session.

Their absence, together with 20 others from the Jubilee coalition, ensured that the assembly lacked the quorum to discuss the motion.

Only 24 MCAs allied to the Jubilee coalition were in the assembly for the debate, against the required number of 42.

Those in the assembly claimed their colleagues had been heavily bribed to stay away from the debate for three consecutive days until the days allocated for the motion elapse.

Minority Chief Whip Hashim Kamau told Nairobi News that efforts to contact their missing colleagues were futile because they refused to pick his calls.

Orderlies at the assembly had reserved chairs for the governor and his legal next to the speaker in anticipation of his appearance.

The motion of impeach was the only item on the order paper.

Eventually the session was adjourned for lack of a quorum and the motion pushed to Wednesday 2.30pm.
