Raid at Waiguru’s posh home was cosmetic, says Grand Mullah

Former Devolution CS Anne Waiguru’s lawyer has accused the anti-graft agency of engaging in a public relations exercise in the disguise of investigating corruption.

Senior counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi said the raid at Ms Waiguru’s home on Tuesday by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission detectives was a cosmetic exercise with no intended results, and a lie to the public that they were investigating her over corruption.

“No one can fool us that they are doing anything when the people accused of defrauding the National Youth Service have already been charged and witnesses listed. That was just an unnecessary drama to draw attention,” said Mr Abdullahi.

According to the lawyer, the detectives found nothing useful to connect Ms Waiguru to the theft at NYS.

He said they only took some ministerial memos she had prepared for a Cabinet meeting with the President and some speeches she was to deliver in a function.

Mr Abdullahi added that the former CS was not contemplating taking legal action against the EACC for raiding her home, confirming that the search was done in a professional manner.

Devolution Principal Secretary Peter Mangiti and former NYS boss Nelson Githinji have been charged with conspiracy to steal Sh695 million at the institution.

The two were charged with attempting to induce Senior Deputy Director-General in charge of Administration Adan Gedow Harakhe not to follow up the matter relating to the conspiracy to steal the money.

They are facing prosecution alongside 24 others said to have been among the chain of connection in the theft syndicate to defraud public funds.

The three anti-corruption detectives who raided Ms Waiguru’s home were said to be in search of documents on the fraudulent payments at NYS.

The detectives searched every part of the house including her children’s bedrooms.
