Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua have called out former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi for defecting to Kenya Kwanza

The duo made the sentiments following a meeting with Meru leaders and referred to Murungi, a seasoned politician and lawyer, as an ‘opportunist’.

“A time like this is when you know people with clear logical commitment and who stand on principle and those who are hovering,” said Odinga.

“We have seen opportunists trying to run away from their original positions, this of course is not something new, its always been there.”

Karua, whose Narc-party has also lost influencial politician Kabando wa Kabando to the Ruto team, stressed that Azimio will continue believing in its ideals.

“We will continue fighting for the ideals that we believe in, its better to have a few committed members than having hangons whose minds are elsewhere,” she said.

“We are impressed by the performance of the Azimio party in Meru in the August polls. We won 31 Member of County Assembly (MCA) seats out of a possible 41 and that counts for something.”

On Friday, Murungi led 13 MCAs from Meru County Assembly elected on his Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) party and 13 elected on United Democratic Alliance ticket to Dr Ruto’s Karen residence where he announced his defection.

President-elect Dr Ruto officially welcomed Mr Kiraitu and his team to Kenya Kwanza saying the leaders had resolved to put the interests of Kenyans first by joining Kenya Kwanza.

Also present at Dr Ruto’s residence to receive Mr Kiraitu was ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi.
