Raila rejects IEBC’s date for fresh election

The National Super Alliance (Nasa) has rejected the date set by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for the fresh presidential election.

The opposition alliance cited electoral agency’s failure to consult them as their reason for rejection of October 17 as the date for the election as was announced by IEBC on Monday.

Speaking to journalists in Nairobi on Tuesday morning, Nasa principals led by, presidential candidate Raila Odinga, said the election cannot be held on October 17 without “legal and constitutional guarantees” from the IEBC.

DEMANDS

“We know what transpired (during the tallying process of the election) and what the IEBC did. We also know that the results will not be different if IEBC doesn’t meet our demands,” Mr Odinga said.

He said Nasa has written to the IEBC stipulating what they want put in place before the elections are held.

“It is not the date, but the preparations for the election which is important to us,” Mr Odinga said.

The Nasa leaders also proposed October 24 or 31 as their preferred date for the fresh election, suggesting that the national examinations should be pushed back by two weeks.
