Rashid Echesa speaks after landing state job

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa has been appointed the chairperson of the Kenya Water Towers Agency Board (KWTA) by President William Ruto. Until his appointment, Mr Echesa had taken a low profile after his sacking by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta over corruption allegations.

Mr Echesa expressed gratitude to President Ruto following his new appointment while pledging his commitment to working “diligently and industriously” to fulfil the Kenya Kwanza (KK) promises to the people of Kenya.

“Congratulations to me for this next step. I am indebted and beholden to H.E. The President Dr. William Ruto for considering me for this noble appointment,” Echesa said.

Mr Echesa’s term will last for three years, effective May 19, 2023. He replaces Robert M. Kariuki, another appointee of retired President Kenyatta.

Mr Echesa played a pivotal role in President Ruto’s campaign team during last year’s General Election, particularly in Western Kenya. However, he lost the Mumias West parliamentary seat to Johnson Naicca.

Recalling his dismissal in 2019, Echesa stated that President Kenyatta never provided a detailed reason for his termination.

“You heard me asking him to shed light on my sacking so I have a clean slate whenever I seek another opportunity. He declined. Later on, I was apprehended and faced several charges which were eventually thrown out of court,” Echesa said during a recent Kenya Kwanza alliance meeting in Busia County.

The fresh appointment could mark the beginning of a political comeback for Mr Echesa.
