EXCLUSIVE: Real Househelps of Kawangware star Nyambegeya talks mental health
Popular actor Donald Openda aka Nyambegeya has opened up on how he at times faces anxiety on stage.
In an exclusive interview with Nairobi News, Nyambegeya, whose stock in the creatives industry has risen following his role in the Real Househelps of Kawangware reality show, further stressed the need to discuss mental health issues not only in the entertainment industry, but in the society as a whole.
“It (mental health) is a big issue in society. We have a number of examples of creatives who have broken down for some reason in recent times,” he explained.
“I am affected. I consistently have to deal with anxiety while on stage. Anxiety is a form of mental illness. Acting is a profession and I have to prepare to entertain and utitlise my talents and earn from it. Anxiety doesn’t help my case.”
As a result, the actor, who’s currently pursuing his Masters in Film Theatre at the Kenyatta University in Nairobi, will be hosting a mental health awareness event on May 27, 2023.
“May is Mental Health Awareness month. We need to talk more about challenges the youth are facing. Raising awareness goes a long way in arresting the problem.”
The event will be held at the Dance Studio, Viking House, 3rd floor, in Westlands, Nairobi.
Those who wish to attend will part with Sh400 for advance tickets and Sh600 at the entrance.
“We have invited psychologists to discuss mental health. There are several other activities lined up including a feel good dancing session.”
Also known by the stage name Don Nyachio, the actor got a breakthrough in the creatives industry when he successfully auditioned at the Hapa Kule show in 2016.
“(Prominent acreatives) Abel Mutua and Njugush conducted the auditions and emerging as among the best to get a chance in that project is something I am proud of. It is also significant as that is where I got my breakthrough.”
The Nyambaria High School alumnus later landed minor roles at the Aunty Boss and Vashita shows before joining the Real Househelps of Kawangware where he perfoms the role of househelp or gate keeper alongside other popular artists including Winny Ruby aka Awiti, and Bernice Njeri aka Njambi.
The Real Househelps of Kawangware is a popular show that highlights the social aspects and challenges of leaving in Kawangware, a mid-lower income residential area in Nairobi.
