Reggae icon Burning Spear 79, returning to Kenya after 17 years

Two-time Grammy award-winning Reggae legend Burning Spear has confirmed that he will perform in Nairobi on October 12, reassuring his Kenyan fans after weeks of uncertainty.

The concert had faced potential cancellation or postponement over the Gen Z protests, causing concern among his followers.

The Jamaican star will perform at Uhuru Park as part of his One People Africa tour, which will see him perform in several African countries.

In a recent Facebook video, the Jamaican star, known for his hit song “Marcus Garvey,” sang and promised that all was well. “Praise Hallelujah,” he sang.

Spear added:

“Kenya October 12, I man will be there. Nuh worry yuhself. … weh Kenya deh worry bout? October 12 man.”

This message brought much-needed relief to fans eagerly awaiting his performance.

The One People Africa tour will also take Burning Spear to Zimbabwe and South Africa.

He is set to perform at the Glamis Arena in Harare on October 18, Emperors Palace (The Park) in Johannesburg on October 19, and Mhundi Wines Farm in Cape Town on October 20.

Burning Spear’s announcement comes after he addressed his 1.7 million followers on Facebook in late June.

While expressing support for his Kenyan “brothers and sisters,” he had voiced concerns about traveling to the East African nation due to ongoing protests against President William Ruto, which had gripped Kenya since the start of June.

Fans expressed their excitement and relief on social media following the confirmation.

“Greetings African teacher…Kenya we are happy! Karibu Kenya,” wrote Shi Vah. Bonnie Wangara added, ”We can’t wait for you to step foot in Nairobi, Kenya.”

James Mbesa echoed these sentiments, saying, “Can’t wait to see you perform live on stage. Welcome again, Grandpa, we love you.”
