Relief to Mutuini traders as construction of Sh244m modern market starts

Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja will inaugurate a modern market in Mutuini Ward, Dagoretti South, bringing relief to residents after years of waiting and complaining.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Sh244 million modern market will sit on 2.4 acres of prime land at Dagoretti Market along Dagoretti/Karen Road.

The event, which will take place on Wednesday, February 7, is in line with Governor Sakaja’s manifesto where he promised residents that he would build 20 new modern markets once elected.

This is also expected to put an end to the residents’ grievances, which have been going on for the past four years under the previous regime.

According to the county government, the new market is expected to serve around 3,500 people and generate revenue for the county.

Reacting to the move, the area Member of the County Assembly Martin Mbugua said it would be a reward to the residents after they struggled to reclaim the land that had been grabbed by the private developer.

Mr Mbugua explained that the market, which is located close to the Southern Bypass, is strategically located to receive goods from other counties, giving an advantage to its wholesale section which is expected to serve neighbouring markets in Ngong, Karen, Kawangware, Karandini and the nearby Dagoretti market on the Kiambu side.

“Our people form the bulk of traders and even customers for the Dagoretti Market and, therefore, all the cess and revenue from the market has been going to Kiambu County and not Nairobi. We have lost billions of shillings over the years and I am happy Governor Sakaja has come to put an end to this loss. The revenue opportunity in the Mutuini Market is huge,” Mr Mbugua said.

The Mutuini ward representative has lauded the governor for quickly acting to their call, assuring them that once the budget captured the development of markets, he would swiftly move to implement it.

“When I first asked him for the market he told me to ensure it’s captured in the budget and he would do the rest. I did and he has kept his word. This is the biggest project ever undertaken by the county government in Dagoretti South and we are not taking it for granted. We have waited for this day with bated breath. It is now a reality,”

The county has also hinted that the new market will host a day-care centre, which allow new mothers to tag along with their toddlers to the market.

The new market will also cater to the youth who will benefit from an entire floor that will host the ICT Centre from where youth are expected to engage in online business in the national and international marketplace.
