Rowdy crowd blocked from looting police lorry carrying guns

Residents of Migaa trading centre, along the Eldoret-Nakuru highway, were on Thursday blocked from looting a police lorry carrying firearms and ammunition that had overturned in the area.

According to an eyewitness, Moses Barasa, the lorry appeared to have developed brake hitches along the Kibunja-Salgaa blackspot before the driver swerved, landing on the roadside.

Drama ensued after news spread to the neighbourhood and residents swarmed the accident scene with intentions to loot.

However, General Service Unit (GSU) officers stationed at the nearby Jolly farm moved to the scene, and together with police officers who were escorting the lorry, managed to repulse the rowdy crowd.

Rongai OCPD Mr Joseph Mwamburi has confirmed the incident.

He said the police lorry was transporting the cache from Eldoret to the Nairobi Police armory.

“We had to seek reinforcement from Rongai police station and the nearest Jolly GSU camp to help deter the public from looting the lorry. The driver who was slightly injured was treated at the GSU camp and discharged,”said Mr Mwamburi.

“We were forced to use batons, sticks and whips to repulse the rowdy crowd,” added Mr Mwamburi.
