Resurrection of Jesus did not happen, say quarter of UK Christians

A quarter of Christians in Great Britain do not believe that Jesus died and resurrected.

This is according to a recent poll that had 23 per cent of Christians saying they do not believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, sentiments shared by 56 per cent of non-Christians.

BIBLE VERSION

The poll also found out that some 41 per cent of Christians believe the resurrection story but not as it was told in the Bible.

The say, the resurrection story cannot be taken literally as captured in the Holy Book.

Jesus’ resurrection story is captured in Matthew, Mark and Luke among other books of the Bible where it is told that on the third day after His death, an empty tomb was discovered.

In Matthew 28, the story is told of how Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to check on the tomb and an earthquake occurred as an angel descended from heaven and rolled over the tomb stone telling the women that Jesus had risen.

LIFE AFTER DEATH

Other aspects captured in the poll were Christians’ belief in life after death where 61 per cent of those interviewed said they believed in it while 31 per cent said they do not believe in life after death.

Reverend Dr Lorraine Cavanagh told BBC that adults cannot believe the resurrection story like they used to do when they were younger.

“You’re talking about adults here. And an adult faith requires that it be constantly questioned, constantly re-interpreted, which incidentally is very much what Modern Church is actually about. So to ask an adult to believe in the resurrection the way they did when they were at Sunday school simply won’t do and that’s true of much of the key elements of the Christian faith,” she said.
