Revamped Uhuru Park to open for Christmas and New Year – Sakaja

Nairobi residents who do not travel upcountry have been promised a mega concert by Governor Johnson Sakaja to be held at the renovated Uhuru Park.

This will be the first concert at the venue under Governor Sakaja since he took office last year.

Speaking at the official opening of the second edition of the Nairobi Festival, the Governor said the park would be opened to residents during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

He urged residents to come during the Christmas festival, which will be free of charge.

“When we end the festival on December 17, come back during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. I will bring fireworks and a mega concert,” Sakaja said.

But the governor said the New Year concert would feature gospel music from various artistes he did not name, promising to share the stage with them.

“It will be gospel. We love Jesus and he has been holding our hands all year. On that day, I will come and perform my gospel song”.

The governor has not specified when both Uhuru and Central Parks will be officially opened to the public after more than two years of renovation.

This is despite earlier promises by the Governor that the two parks would be handed over by the KDF to the Nairobi County Government before the start of the festival.

Despite such promises, the parks remain closed as KDF continues to put the finishing touches to them before handing them over, which could be in 2024.

The renovation of the parks started during the last regime of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, when the defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) was in charge of the city.

The county had also hinted that an entry fee would be introduced for those wishing to access the park, but the governor seems to have a different idea, saying that no one will be charged to enter Uhuru Park.
