‘Catherine begged her stern father for meat to give me’ – Mama Rachel Kasavuli

Mama Rachel Kasavuli has hailed her late daughter, veteran journalist Catherine Kasavuli, as the best daughter among her female children.

Speaking during the funeral service held at the Friends Church, Ngong Road, mama Kasavuli revealed how the fallen journalist had a love for meat and never felt like things were okay if she ate vegetables.

“I don’t eat vegetables but when my husband brought meat home once a week, Catherine was the one who used to beg her father for pieces of meat which she would bring to me. I was born like this and I used to live like this. I always knew what I was going to eat beforehand. Catherine was my best daughter. This other one is around, she is good too. She lives in Europe and she brings me money but Catherine was the best. She used to beg her stern father for meat for me. I am Rachel Kasavuli, the only child and I used to suckle my little finger,” she explained.

“Catherine was a farmer. She used to farm near Nyayo Stadium and she would dig the farm whenever she left work in the evening. I had planted mihogo there and we ate them for breakfast. I once got to the farm and all the people who are here, pray for me. We used to live like white people, including my grandchild. At noon, she would prepare food for everyone. I don’t know what else to say. I have forgotten what I intended to say. Those of you here with us today, may God lead you and your houses, your children, and educate your children. Give them what they want in the name of Jesus. Pray for me wherever you are going . The rest I will speak on them later,” said a grief-stricken 90-year-old mother, explaining it was the reason for her loss of words and forgetting.

She also called on pregnant women in Kenya to name their children Catherine Kasavuli as she walked back to her seat.

The late Kasavuli was a veteran news anchor in Kenya, paving the way for many female journalists in the media industry. She passed on at the Kenyatta National Hospital on December 29, 2022, after a long battle with cervical cancer.
