Riddle of KDF soldier found dead in red light district

Police in Nakuru are investigating the death of a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) of the rank of a Captain who was found dead in a hotel room at Nakuru’s red light district.

The soldier was found dead on Sunday.

Area Police boss Samuel Obara confirmed that detectives have opened an inquiry to establish the cause of the death.

According to Mr Obara the body had no visible body injuries.

“It’s true we are investigating the circumstances under which a KDF soldier of the rank of a Captain was found dead in a room and we have opened an inquiry file to establish the cause of the death,” said Mr Obara without divulging more information.

AUTOPSY

“We shall only establish the cause of the death after an autopsy. That is the much information I have so far,” said Mr Obara.

He could not reveal the unit the officer was based in at the time of his death.

Efforts by the Nation to establish the soldier’s working station were futile as  KDF spokesperson Colonel Paul Njuguna did not respond to our telephone and text messages.

“In a briefing. Please leave a message,” Colonel Njuguna texted back.

Nakuru County is home to several KDF barracks including Third Kenya Rifles, 81Tank battalion and Kenya Military Academy.

An officer involved in the probe said the Captain had booked a room along Kanu Street where he intended to spend the night on Saturday evening.

FAILED TO WAKE UP

He however failed to wake up the following morning, prompting the hotel’s management to alert police.

“We found some medicine inside the room but we are yet to establish whether he was alone at the time of the incident,” said a police source.

The source said that hotel workers on duty that night have already recorded statement with the police over the incident.

“We are at the initial stages of our probe but we have lined up several people for questioning,” said the police source.

KDF soldiers from the Military Police are also assisting police with the investigations.
