How Rigathi Gachagua humbled himself in Botswana

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua handled himself with decorum and poise during his recent visit to Botswana that one would be forgiven for thinking it was his twin brother representing Kenya in the Southern African country.

Known for his harsh and at times uncultured comments, Gachagua took in a complete makeover ahead of his trip to Botswana.

In all his speeches, Gachagua appeared like a true Deputy President, leaving Kenyans scratching their heads as to whether he had two faces.

On April,25, 2023 for instance, Gachagua accompanied by his wife Pastor Dorcas, met Botswana president Dr Eric Mokgweetsi Masisi and First Lady H.E Neo Jane Masisi.

He looked composed as he engaged the Head of State including appealing to the presidency to extend the permits of Kenyans living and working in the country.

“On behalf of H.E. President William Ruto and the People of Kenya, we thank Dr. Masisi and the People of Botswana for the warm reception accorded us. We look forward to hosting him in Nairobi in a few weeks,” Gachagua later said on Twitter.

The second-in command also met young entrepreneurs at the Forbes Under 30 Africa Summit. He further held a diplomatic meetings with his Botswana counterpart vice President Slumber Tsogwane, at the Office of the Vice President in Gaborone.

On Aril 24,2023, Gachagua hosted members of the popular Kenya Boys band Sauti Sol who were featuring at the Forbes Under 30 Africa Summit.

“We had an enriching conversation on empowerment of our youth and the role they, as mentors in their industry and elsewhere, can play in helping vulnerable young people nurture and sharpen their talent to fruition,”

“We also explored possibilities of working together to guide and help rescue young people lost in illicit brews and substance abuse so that they can lead meaningful lives,” he added.

In all his engagements, Gachagua’s speech was full of grace and seasoned with humility.

However, this is not the case when the former Mathira lawmaker is in Kenya where he is normally aggressive and consistently hits out at Azimio la Umoja One Kenya leader Raila Odinga.

He once vowed to ride Odinga on a wheelbarrow to Bondo.

On the other hand, he has been calling Odinga not so pleasant names in most of his speeches.

“We cannot talk to him, who is he in Kenya? We are talking to him on what grounds?” he posed.

“He is just an ordinary citizen lakini kama ako na matatizo ya kibinfasi akuje tumsikilize,” Gachagua added.
