Three killed as rival gangs clash in Mathare gunfight


Police on Wednesday night shot dead two gang members after they engaged a rival gang in a gunfight in Mathare.

According to police, the two rival gangs had a disagreement near Nigeria gate during the day and returned armed at 10pm.

One gang comprised of four young men aged between 21 and 25, while the other gang had three members of the same age.

The two gangs quarreled over an undisclosed matter.

After the quarrel, one gang left and returned on a vehicle and a boda boda and opened fire randomly at the other gang.

One man was killed in the melee while three others were wounded. The assailants escaped towards Juja Road.

The injured were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment and are in stable condition.

Police tracked the assailants and caught up with them at Amana petrol station on Juja Road. The occupants fired at the officers who shot back, killing two on the spot.

A Tokarev pistol with no visible serial number, two rounds of ammunition and a motor cycle were recovered.

During the shootout, one gangster escaped in the vehicle, a blue Toyota 110, registration number KAS 917P.

The bodies were taken to City Mortuary awaiting identification and postmortem.
