Robert Alai, a well-known Kenyan politician, has sparked controversy after criticizing the appointment of TikToker and radio host Azziad Nasenya to the Creatives Technical Committee established by Youth Affairs, Sports and Arts Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba.

In a tweet, Alai expressed his doubts about Azziad’s competence, stating that he was unaware of any serious knowledge that she had about the creative economy or identifying talent.

However, the statement quickly drew backlash from Kenyans on Twitter (KOT), who came to Azziad’s defense, pointing out her credentials as an influencer and radio presenter with a significant following. This sparked a heated debate online, with both sides sharing their opinions on the matter.

The debate further intensified as more Kenyans on the app shared their thoughts on the matter.

Some pointed out that experience does not necessarily come from just reading books, and that Azziad’s skills and understanding of the dynamics of earning from platforms like TikTok were just as important.

Others noted that it was not a matter of skills or experience but a matter of having a fresh, young, clever, enthusiastic, and engaged brain that would bring a fresh perspective to the committee.

Some even suggested that Azziad’s appointment would help promote the creative industry in Kenya.

On the other hand, Alai stood firm in his criticism, suggesting that enough Kenyans knew much more about the creative economy and could have been appointed instead. He went on to share some names, but this only sparked further debate among the KOT.

As the discussion continued, it became clear that there were differing opinions on the matter, with some supporting Azziad’s appointment and others questioning it.

Regardless of the outcome, the debate highlighted Kenyans’ passion and dedication for their country and the creative industry and the importance of making informed decisions when it comes to such appointments.
