Rogue elephant kills woman in Marsabit

June 20th, 2015 1 min read

A middle-aged woman from Songa village was trampled to death by an elephant in Badasa area of Marsabit County on Saturday.

Marsabit Central deputy county commissioner Kipchumba Rutto said the incident occurred along Badasa-Leyai road.

Rutto said woman identified as Ntainywa Lesepen, 27, was walking home from Badasa shopping centre accompanied by her daughter, 10, and another woman when the incident occurred.

The elephant crashed the woman before uprooting several trees and branches around the scene and heaped them on the body. The deceased’s companions managed to flee from the rogue elephant.

The area senior warden Peter Leperin said Kenya Wildlife Services rangers have been deployed to the area to address the situation.

The senior warden who regretted the incident said game rangers will remain in the ground to prevent further human-wildlife conflict.

Police moved the body of the deceased to Marsabit County Hospital Mortuary.
