Roysambu cashes in on demand for houses

Roysambu is emerging as a major residential area following the completion of Thika Superhighway.
A highrise residential blocks boom has gripped the neighbourhood as developers move to cash in on the demand for housing.
They are, it appears, in a mad rush to have a piece of the estate giving rise to tall residential buildings.
Prior to the completion of the road and opening of the TRM shopping mall, most residential blocks were two to three storeys.
“Things have taken a turn and flats are now as high as seven floors,” said Dennis Hodari, a caretaker in one of the buildings.
Most of the tenants, the caretaker said were students from the neighbouring universities and colleges.
The institutions around the neighbourhood include United States International University, KCA University, Kenyatta University and Pan African Christian University.
Hodari said the students were attracted to the estate due to its proximity to their colleges which saves them a lot of money that would go to bus fares.
Rarely would one find a vacant house in the estate due to their high demand among students.
“I don’t even bother advertising since there is always a new tenant eagerly waiting to move in,” he says.
The estate is dominated by bedsitters, one and two bedroomed houses which range form Sh10,000 to Sh18,000 a month.
