Ruto congratulates new UK Prime Minister with Kenyan roots Rishi Sunak


President William Ruto has congratulated newly appointed United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The Head of State said that Kenya was proud of the achievements made over decades of collaboration between the two nations.

In a statement on Tuesday, Dr. Ruto noted that Kenya looks forward to a continuing partnership with the UK.

“President @WilliamsRuto congratulates @RishiSunak on his appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. This follows his election by the Conservative Party,” read the statement.

“Kenya is proud of the achievements made over decades of collaboration between the two nations and looks forward to continuing this historic partnership and to using emerging opportunities for the mutual benefit of our people.”

Sunak who has Kenyan roots on Tuesday officially became Britain’s third prime minister in seven weeks, saying “mistakes were made” by his predecessor as he sought to bring stability to the UK after months of political and economic turmoil.

He was appointed by King Charles III at Buckingham Palace in London shortly after Liz Truss tendered her resignation to the monarch following a shambolic 50-day tenure that shook Britain’s economy to its core.

Sunak becomes the first person of color and the first Hindu to lead Britain after winning a fast-tracked Conservative Party leadership contest on Monday.

At 42, he is also the youngest person to take the office in more than 200 years.

Sunak, a former Chief Secretary to the Treasury, is a business and finance professional who started his political career after being elected Conservative MP for Richmond in 2015.

His father Yashvir Sunak was born in Kenya while his mother Usha Sunak was born in Tanzania. Both are Hindu Punjabis whose parents migrated from India to Kenya and Tanzania respectively.

Sunak’s parents’ families separately moved to Southampton, United Kingdom, where his mother and father later got married. Sunak was born on May 12, 1980 at the Southampton General Hospital.
