Ruto hosts pupils to breakfast

By DPPS May 25th, 2015 2 min read

It all started with a poem. Followed by a promise of bananas and it ended with breakfast at the Deputy President William Ruto’s official residence in Karen, Nairobi.

At 7am, the 62-seater school bus roared at the official residence of the Deputy President. The bus had carried a group of about 45 pupils and a few teachers with a bunch of bananas.

And a dream of Spasha Mereka, 13, a standard seven pupil was realized.

Master Mereka of Pioneer School, Murang’a had earned his colleagues and teachers a treat-breakfast with the Deputy President, a tour of the residence and an opportunity to “feel” his office.

This improbable morning was put in motion two weeks ago in Murang’a. The two met in Murang’a at the schools thanksgiving ceremony where Master Mereka recited a poem on Mr Ruto’s humble background.

Upon hearing the Deputy President’s delight, the young man promised to deliver a bunch of bananas to show his appreciation. On May 25, Mereka did just that.

INVITED FOR BREAKFAST

The overwhelming poem titled “My inspiration” captured the DPs fairy tale journey to become the country’s second in command.

Master Mereka did not stop there; he had used the occasion to request the DP to invite him for breakfast in Nairobi where together they could share a banana from Murang’a County.

Deputy President is expected to share the bunch with the President.

Mr Ruto chatted freely and posed for pictures with the boys and their teachers as they enjoyed breakfast.

The country, he said, offers an opportunity for every child to excel and urged them take their studies seriously by working hard and paying attention to detail and guidance from both parents and teachers.

Mr Ruto said his life was a testimony of what this country can offer to all regardless of their background.

VALID DREAMS

“Looking at me is looking at the possibility of what Kenya gives to each of us,” he said.

“Your dreams are valid; all you need to do is work hard by being consistent and listening to teachers. This country offers an opportunity to every child to excel,” he said.

He urged the students to remain focused and excel in their studies in order to adequately prepare for future challenges.

Mr Ruto said education among other basic entitlements was a right to children.

The Deputy President asked parents to guide and mentor their children to dissuade them from falling into societal challenges like drug abuse.

The student and School’s Principal John Gichengo thanked the DP for his generosity.
