Safaricom returns to 7s rugby

By HILARY KIMUYU September 10th, 2015 1 min read

Safaricom has announced their return as the sponsors of the annual Safaricom Sevens rugby tournament that will be held on the first weekend of next month in Nairobi.

There had been doubts if this year’s tournament would be held since April this year when Safaricom pulled out of the annual rugby event.

At the time, Safaricom cited mismanagement and corruption allegation against some Kenya Rugby Union officials.

But on Wednesday Kenya Rugby Union got a reprieve after the mobile telephone service providers announced their return into the fray.

SUPPORTING RUGBY

During the briefing Safaricom Director of Consumer Business Sylvia Mulinge added that by sponsoring the Safari Sevens does not mean that they will be less vigilant in their demands for proper governance.

Following the announcement rugby fans and other stakeholders expressed their views on Twitter on the return of Safaricom to the tournament.

@KuiKinyanjui said: #SafaricomBackTo7s “Our vision is continue supporting rugby to ensure we do not lose the momentum we’ve gained as a country”

@smusyoka wrote: Quite unfortunate that we had to go down that road but it’s for the benefit of the game. Happy 2 B back – Sylvia Mulinge #SafaricomBackTo7s while @PabloJohny posted: Was just happy he added that Surely…. #NoOneDoes7s like @safaricomltd. Happy to hear that #SafaricomBackTo7s.
