Sakaja on the spot over delayed car loans for MCAs

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is on the spot for reportedly making payments worth millions of shillings in legal fees.

Sakaja who’d earlier said he’d temporarily stopped payments to service providers and contractors owing to lack of funds has since reportedly gone against his directive and paid Sh55 million in legal fees.

This even as the governor reportedly dithered on approving car loans to the Members of County Assembly (MCA) five months after they assumed office.

Nairobi News has learnt of discontent over the delays in approving the loans among the MCAs.

The beneficiary of the payment of the legal fees is reported to be a law firm associated with an advocate of the High Court Kwanga Mboya’s company.

A section of the county staff is now demanding Sakaja come clean on how the payments were made without proper documentation where no invoices were made.

“I suspect taxpayers money has been lost through this illegal deal which has been transacted behind closed curtains. If it was legal why should it be done under the table without transparency? We must get to the bottom of this matter,” said an MCA who sought anonymity.

The MCAs have also called on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to investigate the payments.

“We are ready to cooperate with the investigative agencies in ensuring that the culprits are brought to book. It will not be business as usual under the current term that we are serving and we shall fight corrupt practices in the County Government,” vowed the MCAs who spoke to our reporter.
