Sakaja tells officers not to be intimidated by traders, drivers
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has criticised the conduct of a county inspector who was recently filmed in a confrontation with a female motorist.
Speaking during a meeting with the Central Business District (CBD) designated inspectors and hawkers’ representatives, the governor assured the public that his officers were well-trained, and up to the task and warned that they would not be intimidated while in the line of duty.
Instead, the county boss urged the inspectors to keep their chins up and work for the people of Nairobi towards a clean and orderly city.
“People have tried to put you down. People have called you names. And I’ll say it again, I’ll not allow any officer of Nairobi sitting government to intimidate you. I’ve told you to keep your heads up. Don’t be pulled down by critics. Don’t be pulled down by naysayers,” the Governor said.
“Msikubali mtu kuwadharau ama kuwatukana (don’t allow somebody to insult you),” he added.
He addressed the recent incident where one of the officers was driven away in a locked car by the owner identified as Gloria Ntazola.
“I know last week was very hard for you…wapi huyo officer mwenye alipelekwa sleep over…ungelala poa.
But I was away in France. I’ll not allow.”
The irritated lady had threatened to take the officer to her destination, which is Ngong town, but she instead drove to Athi River through the Nairobi Expressway, a distance of about 20km.
Acting County Secretary Mr Patrick Analo recently claimed the officer was ‘abducted’ by the motorist who is a popular TikToker.
According to Mr Analo, while the law does not allow the officers to enter into the vehicle without permission from the owner, the county has its ways of dealing with such incidences where the traffic offenders try to run away after committing an offence.
Mr Analo also said that the preliminary investigations in a report from the security department show that the motorist who shared the viral clip while abusing the officer had committed an offence of double-parking but he refused to follow the direction from the officers.
The governor also said that his administration will motivate all the inspectorate officers by ensuring that they have new uniforms, vehicles for patrolling as well and communication devices.
He said that when he took leadership last year, the first thing that he did was to renovate the offices of his inspectorate officers, which he said were in a dilapidated state.
The governor stated that the changes are part of his plans towards the reputable image of the inspectorate department, which has been criticized for long in the past regimes.
