One dead as building collapses in Makongeni

One person succumbed to injuries on Wednesday after a four storey building collapsed near Makongeni police station along Jogoo road.

According to the Kenyatta National Hospital spokesperson, the patient  succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital.

Six other patients have been discharged, while one other is still undergoing treatment.

The building is reported to have collapsed at around 3am Wednesday.

Over 30 families are believed to have been living in the building.

The building is reported to have collapsed at around 3am Wednesday and most of the tenants are said to be students at the Technical University of Kenya.

Those trapped in the debris  are said to be communicating with friends and relatives.

St John ambulance reported that the first three floors of the building had tenants.

Seven people were pulled out of the rubble, according to Kenya Red Cross.

Rescue efforts are being conducted by teams from the Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre, the Kenya Red Cross Society, the Nairobi City Fire Brigade and the National Youth Service.

Nairobi Deputy Governor Jonathan Mueke said military is leading the rescue operation.

The building was still under construction and tenants had moved into the ground, first and second floors.
