SDA church mourns UoN students who died in Lake Victoria boat accident


The Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church is mourning the three University of Nairobi (UoN) students who died after a boat they were riding on capsized in Lake Victoria at the weekend.

In a tweet, the SDA Family fun page said that the three were part of a group that had gone on an evangelical tour in Budalangi Constituency when the incident happened.

“The University of Nairobi SDA church (Kenya) lost three students in Lake Victoria after completion of an evangelist campaign. Our condolences go to their families, friends and the University at large for the loss. May God comfort you all brethren!” the tweet reads.

Three students drowned while four of their colleagues were rescued in the incident that took place over the weekend.

Nairobi News has established that a group of Christians from different parts of the country had converged at Port Victoria in Budalangi Constituency where they conducted prayers and also evangelical missions.

The trio which died in the boat incident were part of the team of Christians who had gathered at the function.

Addressing the media after the incident, Port Victoria police boss Mr Isaiah Mose said he had been briefed that the three were among hundreds who had gathered there.

“They drowned at Mulokoba Beach after their boat capsized. The group had taken a brief break and decided to take a boat ride when the boat overturned on the lake,” said Mose.

He said that the group had entered deep into the lake and they were taking a selfie when the boat capsized.

According to the police boss, the incident was reported around 4pm on Saturday, barely hours into the New Year.

Officers from the Coast Guard had retrieved two bodies by mid-morning Sunday, according to Mr Mose.
