Senate team apologises to Kidero over Sonko brawl

Senate’s County Public Accounts and Investments Committee has apologized to Nairobi County Governor Evans Kidero over his scuffle Senator Mike Sonko.

Senator Sonko had two weeks ago engaged Governor Kidero in a physical fight during a session of the committee, forcing the committee to abruptly adjourn.

Committee chairman Anyang’ Nyong’o over the weekend said that the incident was unfortunate, and added that measures will be put in place to ensure discipline is observed in the Senate.

He said Speaker of Senate will give direction on steps to be taken to ensure order and discipline is restored in the Senate.

“The Speaker of Senate is currently away on official duty, but when he comes back he will be able to give direction on the necessary steps which will be taken to ensure order and discipline is restored in the Senate. We all know that every market place has its mad man,” Mr Nyong’o said in a press statement.

Governor Kidero had written a letter to the Senate threatening to boycott summons by the committee due to security reasons.

He indicated that if no action is taken against Sonko, he will move to the Supreme Court to seek an advisory opinion to challenge the parliamentary immunity given to members, in order to clear his name.

Kidero had been summoned to answer queries on the county’s financial spending for the 2013/14 financial year.
