Senators meet mortuary team in Pumwani twins saga
The Senate Health Committee will meet City Mortuary officials on Tuesday, in a bid to unravel the mystery surrounding the whereabouts of twin babies claimed by a hospital to have been stillbirths.
This is after a DNA test, conducted to ascertain the identity of the bodies, revealed that they were neither twins nor were they related to Mr Dedan Kimathi and his wife Jacinta Wanjiku.
The couple are accusing Pumwani Maternity Hospital of swapping their babies with dead ones. But the hospital management has maintained that the babies were born dead.
Whereas Ms Wanjiku has maintained that she heard one of the babies cry, the hospital management insists that the facility handles many deliveries in a day and that the cry was from another baby.
Medical background
Senators who have a medical background, led by the committee’s chairman, Dr Mohammed Kuti (Isiolo, URP) have come in handy as the investigations get under way to determine what happened to the babies.
The City Mortuary officials are expected to tell the committee whether they received the babies from the hospital by presenting relevant documents.
County Chief Medical Officer Robert Ayisi and the hospital superintendent, Dr Omondi Kumba, have accused the City Mortuary of presenting corpses other than those of the twin babies, which were handed over to them for postmortem examination and the DNA testing.
