Magelo faults salaries body

October 17th, 2013 1 min read

Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Alex Ole Magelo has faulted the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) for  being insensitive to the welfare of County Representatives.

Mr Magelo termed the Commission’s chairperson Sarah Serem “an enemy of devolution” for showing apathy to their calls for higher salary perks.

“She has been indifferent to the reality that County Reps are getting peanuts yet their mandate is key in the devolution process,” said Mr Magelo.

Mr Magelo is the architect of a proposal that demands about Sh 600,000 a month for County Speakers and Sh 275,000 salaries for County Reps.

He insists Governor cannot “move an inch” without the County Assembly.

“We shall strike and paralyse operations of the county,” said Mr Magelo.

Among the demands by Mr Magelo on behalf of the County Speakers Forum is that salaries for the County Assembly be drawn from their own accounts and not the Consolidated Fund.

Other demands include car loans ranging between Sh 1-3 million, a mortgage at a 3 per cent rate, transport allowance of Sh 50,000 and Sh 10,000 sitting allowances for chairmen of committees and Sh 7,800 for members per sitting.

“At Sh 79,000 a month, County Reps are taking home Sh 58,000, just the same as clerical officers grade 8. Where is the dignity for County Reps in these salaries?” posed Mr Magelo.
