Anti-counterfeit sleuths sieze fake phones worth Sh10 million in Nairobi

Seven people were arrested in a sting operation conducted by Anti Counterfeit Agency (ACA) on Thursday afternoon.

The officers raided several exhibition stalls on Mfangano Street and confiscated counterfeit mobile phones and those arrested are aiding police with investigations.

The raid by ACA and police officers targeted shops which were selling fake Samsung Mobile devices and managed to seize 213 mobile phone pieces and accessories worth more than Sh10 million.

In March, counterfeit mobile phones worth Sh8 million were confiscated from shops on Luthuli Avenue by ACA officers as six suspects were arrested during a similar operation.

The mobile phones which were seized had been rebranded and falsely labelled with names of popular brands including Samsung, HTC, Nokia, Huawei, and Sony.

Also seized during the operation were phone accessories such as chargers, batteries, phone covers and earphones.

In a similar operation in February fake phones worth an estimated Sh3 million were impounded from several shops on Nairobi’s Tom Mboya Street by officials of a multi-agency team fighting illicit trade.

Anti-Counterfeit Agency raided several shops targeting small scale retailers within the city’s CBD and netted mostly counterfeited Samsung phones.

Traders selling the illegal handsets were caught unawares and arrested in the sting operation.
