Seven varsity students hospitalised amid claims of death after police brutality
Seven University of Nairobi students were hospitalised after anti-riot police invaded the institution last week and beat up students who had engaged in a demonstration.
However, reports of a student dying after Thursday’s police brutality cannot be verified by student leaders at the institution.
Mr Ascon Kamili, the Accommodation Director in the Students of Nairobi University (Sonu) team that recently left office and which has not been replaced because of a court case, has said he is aware that seven students were hospitalised following the police onslaught but has not received reports of any death.
“The university health department has informed us of seven students who were hospitalised, some with serious injuries, but we are yet to confirm any death,” he told Nairobi News.

The students had last week held street demonstrations to push for the release of Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino.
Mr Ongili, a former student leader at the university, had been arrested for allegedly making abusive remarks at a public rally.
Police responded to the demonstration by storming into the institutions and flushing students from hostels and lecture rooms. Videos have circulated online shwoing police assaultying and injuring the students.
State House has defended the brutality meted at the students bu arguing that rogue elements were allowed into the institution’s hostels.
The civilian oversight body, Independent Police Oversight Authority (Ipoa) has launched investigation on the incident.
