Shock as city askaris demolish approved stalls in Fedha, Tassia – PHOTOS

City askaris on Thursday demolished over 100 structures which were erected months ago with the permission of the County government.

The askaris were accompanied by armed police and heavy machinery as they descended on the stalls in the morning. Traders said they were not issued with a warning.

The structures were put up by area MCA Patrick Karani as part of his Youth Empowerment Programme.

A county government official however explained that the structures are no longer needed because they make the city untidy.

“Most of these people come from rural area and build illegal structures then leave and go back leaving the Nairobi looking like a dumping ground,” said Nairobi Chief Operations Officer Peter Mbaya.

“If we allow people to build illegal structures what kind of Nairobi will we have?” he posed. “These people will go back to wherever they came from. Some came from the rural areas.”

Mr Mbaya said the exercise will be extended to Taj Mall area, Embakasi East village, Manyanja Road and Buru Buru.
