Siaya county to spend Sh2 million to kill bedbugs

Siaya county government has set aside Sh2 million to fight bedbugs.

Deputy governor Wilson Onyango said the use of hot water and regular pesticides to kill the pest had failed.

He said the amount is part of the Sh20 million kitty to be used to stem increasing cases of cholera.

The county has recorded two deaths in the past one week and a total of 81 cases for the past three months.

“We want to identify a possible drug that will assist in containing the infestation since these bedbugs are resistant to insecticides and hot water which are being used by people,” he said at a press conference in Bondo town.

The most affected areas include Ndira, Usenge and Manyuanda.

The deputy governor called on area residents to observe hygiene to stop the spread of the vermin.

He said the county has also released some Sh20 million from its emergency kitty to buys drugs in the fight against cholera.

The bulk of the money, Sh14 million, will be used to purchase assorted medicine.
