Six dead, several injured in Londiani road accident

Six people have been confirmed dead while several others injured after a 62-seater bus owned by the Transmara Transport Company collided head on with a saloon vehicle along the Londiani-Muhoroni-Kisumu highway.

The bus, which was heading to Kisumu, lost control and swerved off its lane, knocking the smaller vehicle which was headed to Nairobi.

Five of the dead were travelling in the saloon vehicle, a Toyota Wish, leaving only a single survivor following the fatal crash.

The 3:30am incident occurred at the Tunnel Corner, which has over the last one year become a black spot.

INVESTIGATIONS

Londiani OCPD Joseph Odipo said the police are still pursuing the three co-drivers of the bus who fled the scene.

According to Mr Odipo, the bus, registration number KBT 896X, lost control and collided with the Toyota Wish, registration number KBX 472R and then rolled several times.

“From our preliminary investigations and from eye witness accounts, the brakes of the bus appear to have failed. We are pursuing the drivers for questioning,” said Mr Odipo.

The police were unable to determine the total number of passengers in the bus as Good Samaritans had started moving the injured to hospitals around the scene of the accident when the police arrived.

The bodies of the dead have been moved to the Londiani Sub-County Hospital Mortuary.
