‘Sleeping carton’ fight: Man charged for assaulting cellmate in police station


A 21-year-old man who allegedly assaulted and injured his cellmate at Kayole Police Station during a fight for a carton they both wanted to sleep on is facing assault charges.

Anthony Omwenga has been charged with assaulting and injuring Dennis Kioko on May 19, 2023 inside the cells where they were being detained.

The two picked a quarrel over the piece of a carton that Mr Omwenga claimed ownership of while Mr Kioko also wanted to sleep on it.

Police officers on duty at the station intervened and rescued Mr Kioko, who suffered a swollen eye. Thereafter he was taken to hospital where he was treated before he was returned to the cells.

Mr Omwenga denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Hellen Okwani at the Makadara Law Courts. He was released on a cash bail of Sh30,000. The case will be mentioned on August 2, 2023 before hearing starts on November 1, 2023.

The prosecution has lined up four witnesses to testify against Mr Omwenga. They include Mr Kioko, two police officers who rescued him, the officer investigating the case and a medic who attended to the complainant at the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi.
