Source of smoke, loud ‘bangs’ in Gigiri explained


The Village Market, the United States Embassy and the National Police Service and have informed residents of Gigiri not to panic on Saturday when they hear loud bangs occasioned by an emergency security drill.

In a notice to its clients, the Village Market on Friday asked the public to maintain calm during the exercise, emphasizing that it is just a drill.

“The long-planned Joint Readiness Exercise will improve the participants ability to potential security threats. As such, it is designed to be as realistic as possible, to include the use of  smoke, loud ‘bangs’ and simulated small arms fire,” the notice read in part.

TERROR THREATS

The US Embassy also confirmed the planned security drill in a tweet on Saturday morning.

According to Village Market Management, the exercise is expected to end in the early hours of Sunday.

The drill comes in the wake of a heightened alert on terror threats in the country since the start of the Holy month of Ramadhan.

The Inspector General of National Police Service, Joseph Boinnet, on Friday assured the public of beefed up security across the country. He further asked members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
