SNAPPY 7: Vanessa Mdee – I have uncountable weaves

She is arguably one of the best female artistes to come out of Tanzania. Mdee, who won the Best Female Artiste of the Year in 2015’s MTV Africa Music Awards, is also known for being the first ever Tanzanian MTV VJ.

The songwriter and youth activist would later rise to prominence as a radio and TV personality, hosting such shows like Epic Bongo Star Search and Dume Challenge on ITV Tanzania.

In an exclusive interview with Nairobi News, the 28 year old singer says her hit Niroge is just the beginning of many more good things that her fans should expect.

1. Briefly tell us about yourself? – I am an Afro-pop musician and I was born in Tanzania. I also love positive vibrations.

2. Niroge song is a big hit, tell us about it?Niroge is a beautiful love song. It was a change from what I do but I love what the song and video has done for me. The video was shot in South Africa and my team has been pushing it out there. It is my first song to have more than a million views on YouTube. The song is about that undeniable true love.

3. How many weaves do you have? – Plenty, I couldn’t count. I try to change as much as I can and I also change the colours as much as I can; different colours, different textures and different cuts.

4. Apart from weaves, you also have so many sunglasses? – For some crazy reasons I keep breaking and losing them, so I don’t have that many right right now. Apart from my corrective lens, I have like 36 pairs of glasses.

5. What do you do with your free time? – I sleep. I try my best to get as much rest as I can. The music industry is very time consuming and when I have some free time, I try my best to recuperate.

6. What is your most embarrassing moment? – I had just won an award at the 2014 Kilimajaro Awards and I went up to pick my award and I cropped and fell. Social media made fun of me through memes and little jokes about my trip. They thought I couldn’t walk on heels. Funny enough, same thing happened again in Nigeria after I won an award. So, please, God, never again!

7. What should your fans expect from you next? – I’m actually finishing my album right now and it will be out before the end of the year. About collaboration with Kenyan artistes, it’s a surprise.
