Sofapaka vow to halt Gor Mahia’s unbeaten run

Sofapaka captain John Baraza says that his team has the wherewithal to end Gor Mahia’s unbeaten run, and that they are focused on bagging all three points from the Sunday clash.

“We are very well prepared for the match because we know that they (Gor) are a string side and they are on a very good run so far. We shall carry a winning mentality into the match and hope for good results,” Baraza told the Daily Nation Sport.

The GOtv Shield holders play guests to K’Ogalo on Sunday afternoon at the Nairobi City Stadium in what is the biggest match of the weekend judging by the caliber of players featuring for both teams.

K’Ogalo have on their side the reliable Meddie Kagere, Michael Olunga and Ali Abondo, all who have proven to be of top quality and who have scored 13 goals between them for K’Ogalo so far.

They will come face to face with Sofapaka’s Enoch Agwanda, Abdul Fiston and the ageless Baraza who are equally lethal in attack on a good day.

GOOD START

But while Batoto ba Mungu have already lost one match this season, the defending champions are riding on a six match unbeaten run, something that gives coach Frank Nuttall great confidence going into the match.

“We are enjoying quite a good start to the season, and the players are well motivated. I know that we will come up against very strong opponents, but we also have a strong team and I believe we shall secure a good result,” he said.

Also on Sunday, a limping Tusker will face Western Stima at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu eager to turnaround their fortunes after the 1-0 midweek loss to Bandari.

The brewers have only won two matches in seven outings this season, and pressure is mounting on coach Francis Kimanzi to conjure more satisfying results.

These matches will however be preceded by Saturday’s double-header at Nyayo National Stadium where KCB will tackle Nairobi City Stars before AFC Leopards takes on Ushuru.

The other weekend matches will see Chemelil Sugar take on Thika United at the Muhoroni Stadium, Sony Sugar will be seeking redemption against Mathare United at Nyayo while Ulinzi Stars and Nakuru All Stars will clash in a Nakuru derby at Afraha Stadium.

Saturday: KCB v City Stars (Nyayo-2pm), AFC Leopards v Ushuru (Nyayo-4:15pm)

Sunday: Chemelil Sugar v Thika United (Muhoroni-12pm, Nakuru All Stars v Ulinzi Stars (Afraha-3pm), Mathare United v Sony Sugar (Nyayo-3pm), Western Stima v Tusker (Moi Kisumu-3pm), Gor Mahia v Sofapaka (City-3pm)
