Sonko claims Mombasa gubernatorial election was marred with irregularities

Ex-Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has claimed to have proof that the Mombasa governor-elect won through bribery and intimidation.

Making the claims on his Facebook page in response to a fan who chided him, Sonko said he can go to court and have the election nullified.

“I conceded defeat and congratulated Nassir but that does not mean we are weak or we fear you. I have done that so that the great people of Mombasa can progress,” he started.

“If you continue we will show you that you won through voter intimidation, bribery and rigging. The evidence I have of any judge or court will nullify the Mombasa gubernatorial election. We will go for a re-run in less than 3 months,” he added.

This comes a day after he conceded defeat even before the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced the results whilst applauding Abdulswamad Nassir of the Orange Democratic Party, an affiliation of the Azimio la Umoja.

“Congratulations Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir for your win as the second Governor of Mombasa we live to fight another day. I shall as well continue to support you all in my little capacity and that of my Sonko Rescue team,” he said.

While regretting not being on the ballot, Sonko added, “I wish I was on the ballot but no matter how long it takes inshallah God’s time is the best.

The flamboyant politician was disqualified by the Supreme Court because he had been impeached by the Nairobi County Assembly and Senate with efforts to battle the disqualification being unsuccessful.

On Tuesday, the electoral commission officially declared Abdulswamad Nassir (ODM) as the winner of the Mombasa governor race with 119,083 votes, closely followed by Hassan Omar with 98,105 votes.

Other candidates were Awiti Bollo Hezron with 875 votes, William Kingi with 712, Shafi Makazi 633, Said Abdallalla 338 and Daniel Kitsao 402.
