Sonko continues with crackdown on hawkers, boba boda riders


The crackdown on hawkers and boda boda operators in city centre entered the fifth day on Monday.

Dubbed ‘Operation Fagia Nairobi County‘, it part of Governor Mike Sonko efforts to rid the city centre of the hawking menace.

The operation being undertaken jointly by  County Inspectorate officers and police officers seconded by Nairobi county commissioner.

City Hall officials have told Nairobi News that they will continue with the crackdown for ten more days.

Mr Wilson Too, one of the officers in charge of the operation, said they have expanded the operation to include areas surrounding the CBD.

“The crackdown is still going on and today we are in CBD. We have divided ourselves in four groups to ease our movements. Right now I cannot tell the exact number of those arrested today but I will get the report at the end of the day,” Mr Too said.

The crackdown has seen illegal structures demolished, hawkers and boda boda operators flushed out from the central business district.

Tom Mboya Street, Country Bus, Nyamakima area, Kirinyaga road, Globe roundabout, River Road, Racecourse Road, Wakulima market and Railways matatu termini and Ronald Ngala Road have been turned into near war zones during the operation.

On Friday, gunshots and cries of help rented the air as the two sides engaged in running battles in the streets of Nairobi.
