Sonko gives Caf’s inspection team a cold shoulder

By NAHASHON MUSUNGU September 15th, 2017 1 min read

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Thursday snubbed a meeting with a delegation of senior officials from the Confederation of African Football (Caf) who are in the city on official duty.

Sonko was scheduled to meet the delegation, led by second vice president Omari Selemani, to discuss Nairobi’s preparedness to host the 2018 Africa Nations Championship.

But neither the Governor, his deputy Polycarp Igathe or any City Hall official showed up for the 6pm appointment.

“Courtesy call to Governor called off due to unforeseen circumstances as Governor not yet back from funeral he attended this afternoon,” a text message sent to newsrooms by a senior official of the competition’s Local Organizing Committee confirmed.

POLITICAL SITUATION

Already, Caf is said to be concerned with Kenya’s fluid political situation after the Supreme Court nullified August 8 presidential election and ordered for a repeat of the same.

Plus, the country is far behind in terms of preparations given none of the five stadiums earmarked to host the matches is any where near ready.

Nairobi is expected to provide the hub of logistical operations should Kenya host the competition.

Other officials accompanying Mr Omari for the inspection tour include Caf’s tournaments director Mohammed El Shawarby, IT director Tarel El Deeb, competitions director Khaled Nassar, service deputy director Abdel Razek, media manager Mohammed Thabetttt and marketing and TV assistant Amira Amin.
