Street families invading city centre not from Nairobi – Sonko
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has claimed the city is shouldering the burden of street families from neighbouring counties.
The governor said the hordes of street families that have invaded the centre are mostly from Nakuru County.
Sonko recently launched an operation to flush out street children from the central business district.
He said the operation is in line with his campaign pledge to ensure the street families are taken to orphanages and rehabilitation centres.
“After thorough investigations were conducted it has been revealed almost all of them come from outside Nairobi. Nakuru County leads with a big number of street families who come to Nairobi intentionally,” said Sonko.

Sonko said the rescued children will be rehabilitated from drug addiction and given life skills including enrolling them back in school.
He also sought city residents’ help on how to deal with the rescued children.

Sonko said the county will install additional CCTV cameras and increase street lighting to aid in the fight against crime.
This is not the first time an attempt has been made to get the families off the streets of the capital city.
