Sonko poaches Uhuru’s staff for top City Hall job


Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko has raided President Uhuru Kenyatta’s office for a top official expected to bring experience to his administration

Governor Sonko on Tuesday submitted to the the county assembly the name of Peter Kariuki as his nominee for county secretary.

Mr Kariuki currently works at the Project Delivery Unit in the Office of the President.

“Pursuant to Section 44 2(a and b) of the County Government Act, 2012, I hereby nominate Mr Peter Kariuki to be considered for approval by the County Assembly for the appointment to the position of County Secretary,” read the letter by Governor Sonko addressed to the county Speaker Beatrice Elachi.

Should Mr Kariuki’s name be approved, he will become the third county secretary for Nairobi county since the start of the devolved units in the country.

CORRUPTION CLAIMS

The first was Lilian Ndegwa who was hounded out of office in 2015 over corruption claims and later charged, alongside other county officials, with defrauding the county of shs17 million.

Ms Ndegwa was succeeded by Dr Robert Ayisi.

Mr  Leboo Ole Morintat  has been holding the position in an acting capacity after succeeding Dr Ayisi who left office in August over health problems.

Mr Kariuki was part of eight names that were shortlisted and interviewed for the position back in October.

The office of the county secretary is the heartbeat of all operations by the executive in the county. Theb holder of the office heads the County Public Service in addition to being the secretary to the County Executive Committee.
