Sonko’s dad laid to rest in ‘diamond and gold’ encrusted casket
Flamboyant Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko broke the bank on Tuesday as he organized a lavish funeral for his father Gideon Kioko Kivanguli who died last month in a Nairobi hospital.
Mzee Kivanguli’s remains were chauffeured from the Lee Funeral home in a coffin that was encrusted with gold and diamond fakes.
It was carried by a convoy of more than 60 top-of-the-range vehicles and 10 outrider motorbikes.
The motorcade caused a huge traffic snarl up on Nairobi roads as it made its way to his final resting place in Mua Hills farms, between Makutano Junction and Machakos Town.
On the way, two Mercedes vehicles were involved in an accident along Mombasa Road and it took the intervention of the Sonko Rescue Team ambulances to attend to the injured.
On Monday, the senator sent an invitation to his fans to attend the funeral.
“My Dad Will be LAID TO REST tomorrow TUESDAY, 15TH, SEP at MUA HILLS(SONKO’S FAMILY FARM) between Makutano Junction & Machakos Town,” he wrote.
“Ukifika Mua Road (Still on your way to Machakos) You will find a big sign showing the directions of Mua Road and Family Home. Note from the highway to the house the road is well tarmacked and the road will lead you straight to my house no worry in case of rain or vumbi. You are all welcome.”
Mzee Kivanguli died on September 6 while admitted at the intensive care unit of a hospital in Nairobi.
